While 3-D conformal radiation therapy is the current standard of care for the delivery of radiation, it can potentially cause long-term morbidity or mortality to patients. Advanced technology, like Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), can offer a more concentrated way of delivering a dose of radiation, and can, in turn, spare patients from life-threatening toxicities. For these reasons, Steven H. Lin, MD, PhD, believes IMRT should be adopted as the new standard. Lin, associate professor of radiation oncology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, recently gave a presentation on advances in radiation therapy during the 2017 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium. In an interview with Targeted Oncology, Lin discussed the benefits of advanced radiation technologies, including IMRT and proton therapy.
