A recent study has found that men with inflammatory bowel disease may be up to five times more likely to have prostate cancer than those without the condition, and when they have it, the cancer is more aggressive. The findings, from a single-center analysis that included more than 10,000 patients, should change clinical practice, according to the researchers. Dr. Kundu and his colleagues set out to study the relationship between IBD and prostate cancer in light of two known connections: Chronic inflammation contributes to the pathophysiology of prostate cancer and IBD patients are at increased risk for extraintestinal cancers, such as those of the lung, bladder and skin.
