For patients facing oral cancer, treatment can affect far more than the disease itself. Repeated surgeries may impact the ability to speak, eat, and swallow, making the search for less invasive treatment options especially important.
An innovative approach supported by the Asian Fund for Cancer Research Limited (AFCR) has now reached an encouraging clinical milestone.
Promising Results from an Innovative Treatment Approach
Newly reported Phase 2 clinical trial results show significant progress for PRV111, an innovative medicated patch designed to deliver anticancer drugs directly to affected oral tissue.
The study involved 22 patients with non-invasive oral cancer or high-grade precancerous lesions. Following one treatment cycle:
- 95.5% (21 of 22 patients) achieved a complete response, with no remaining disease detected in the treated area.
- All 22 patients avoided their planned surgical excision.
- No recurrences were observed at a median follow-up of 14 months.
The treatment was also generally well tolerated, with most reported treatment-related side effects being mild.
Advancing Research with Patients in Mind
AFCR has supported research into innovative drug-delivery technology designed to concentrate anticancer treatment where it is needed while limiting exposure to the rest of the body.
This approach could be particularly meaningful for patients who might otherwise require repeated oral surgeries. Beyond treating the disease, reducing the need for invasive procedures could help preserve essential everyday functions and improve patients’ quality of life.
Although the findings are promising, PRV111 remains an investigational treatment, and further clinical studies are needed to establish its long-term safety and effectiveness.
At AFCR, we believe the value of cancer research lies not only in scientific discovery but also in its potential to improve patients’ lives. These latest results represent meaningful progress toward more effective, less invasive treatment options.
